The Art of Looking Expensive: How to Make or Fake a Costless Costume

2020 Update:

Given that it has been several years since I originally wrote this post (2012) for the students of Arizona State University's DCE111/211 Raqs Sharqi classes, I wanted to update the text to provide new, more relevant information in light of the permanent closure of Costless Costumes and Nature's Gems.

Even though Costless has lamentably closed its doors, their legacy continues to influence style and costume choices for Middle Eastern Dance Artists across the globe. As such, I wanted to share some of the information, tips, and tricks that I have found over the years, when creating a Costless-inspired costume, or restoring a genuine Costless costume, if you are lucky enough to obtain an original bedlah decoration set.

[UPDATE FORTHCOMING ASAP!]
